What we collect

When you ask for a free sample: your email address, the city you chose, and, if the link you came from had them, the buyer type (such as lumber, roofing or insurance) and the ad source tags that show which ad or post sent you. To stop abuse of the form, we also keep a scrambled form of your network address for 30 days, then delete it. If you subscribe to the weekly list: your email address, the city you picked, the business name you give at checkout, and Stripe's reference for your subscription. When you use the site we record how you move, scroll and click on our pages, as session recordings and heat maps, so we can see where a page is confusing. Anything you type into a form is hidden from these recordings.

Why

To give you the sample, and to send subscribers the weekly list they pay for. The ad source tags tell us which ads bring people in.

What we email you

A copy of the sample you asked for; if you subscribe, the weekly list and notices about your subscription; and replies when you write to us. No marketing emails.

Phone numbers

If you give us a phone number on a form, such as the one inside our Facebook or Instagram ads, we use it only to call or text you about the list you asked for and the weekly plan. We text you only if you ticked the box saying we may. Reply STOP to any text and we stop. We never sell or share your phone number.

Who sees it

We never sell your email. It, and what we record of your visit, is shared only with the services named below that run the site, record its pages and handle payments for us.

Where it is stored

Sign-ups are stored in a database service, Supabase, which keeps them for us. The sample and the weekly list are sent through an email service, Resend. Microsoft Clarity stores the page recordings and heat maps for us; how Microsoft handles that data is in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Ads and payments

Sign-ups may also come through a sign-up form inside our Facebook or Instagram ads. In that case Meta collects your email address, and your phone number if the form asks for it, and passes them to us. Payments are handled by Stripe, and we never see your card number.

Do Not Track

The site works the same whether or not your browser sends a Do Not Track signal: Microsoft Clarity, which records our pages, does not respond to it. Clarity does respect Global Privacy Control, and when your browser sends that signal our pages do not load Clarity at all, so turning it on stops the recording. Clarity uses its own cookies to link the pages of a visit, and later visits, together, and Microsoft receives your network address when it loads; the Microsoft Privacy Statement says how Microsoft uses them. The site loads its typeface from Google Fonts, so Google receives your network address when a page opens. We use no advertising pixels. We count page visits and button clicks on this site to learn which ads work. We also count how far a page is scrolled, each step of the sign-up form, and the answer to our one-question survey; none of these counts holds anything you type. We count downloads of the sample and clicks on the links in our emails against your sign-up. We ourselves keep no network address, only a scrambled code that is deleted after 30 days.

Delete your data

To have your data deleted, email ethan@basisweb.net. Page recordings are kept for up to 30 days, and a few for up to 9 months, then removed automatically; they cannot be deleted one by one before that.
